With award-winning cartoon, Iranian cartoonist denounces international indifference to emergency refugees

In an interview with Opera Mundi, Alireza Pakdel says he always wanted to change the world with his art; he was the winner of the 43rd International Exhibition of Piracicaba HumorThe emergence of refugees is a global issue and all artists should pay attention to this problem. " With charge on refugees internationally awarded, the Iranian cartoonist Alireza Pakdel talked with Opera Mundi on the humanitarian crisis and the potential humor in helping social causes.

From the African and Turkish coast, thousands of people risk daily in precarious vessels in crossing the Mediterranean Sea in search of better living conditions in Europe. According to the IOM (International Organization for Migration), 3,771 people died in shipwrecks in the Mediterranean only in 2015 and it is estimated that the rate is 50% higher in 2016.

Charge Alireza Pakdel was awarded in international events in Turkey and Brazil

The work of Pakdel was awarded in the 36th International Competition of Cartoons Nasreddin Hodja, event held in Turkey in July, and was also the winner of the 43rd International Humor Exhibition of Piracicaba - which runs until 12/10 - taking stayed with the Award for Best Charge and Grand Prix event.

For Gilmar Machado, Brazilian cartoonist and one of the judges in this year's Show, Pakdel of charge uses humor to "report, alert and questioning" and, therefore, has been chosen winner of the highest award of the event.

The work of Pakdel, rather than address the issue of refugees, positions itself critically in relation to the media spectacle, the gap caused by the saturation of information. In this sense, the graphic humor allows to step forward in discussions on the subject and the award reinforces the importance of this critical view, "said the report, in turn, the Geisa Fernandes researcher, another juror this year's Hall.
To Pakdel, winning the Grand Prix of the Salon was an opportunity to draw attention to the humanitarian crisis. "The award is one of the most important in the world. I hope [my charge] draw attention and have an impact in countries that are receiving and the countries that refuse to receive refugees, "he said.

Pakdel says drawing since childhood and always wanted to bring something positive to the world with his art. "My family bought a lot of comic books to me when I was a kid. Using many colors and geometric shapes, Pakdel said to have a "unique style of caricatures." "I like to draw my characters with only one eye," he said.
 
Social problems that are directly linked to people's lives are your favorite subjects to draw."My hope as an international cartoonist is to be a person engaged [in social causes]. Personally I wish I could change the world with my art, "said Pakdel.
